Mayor William Peduto, the City of Pittsburgh, and the Pittsburgh Partnership, are pleased to announce the 2014 Pittsburgh Summer Youth Employment Program (PSYEP) and the release of applications. This locally-funded summer employment program has the potential to employ over 500 youth workers, allowing the youth to gain valuable work experience, earn wages and contribute to Pittsburgh’s economic growth. The 2014 Pittsburgh Summer Youth Employment Program is made possible through allocations by Mayor William Peduto and Pittsburgh City Council. Current funding is around $1,300,000. Additional sources are still being sought.

The 2014 Pittsburgh Summer Youth Employment Program is open to City of Pittsburgh residents between the ages of 14 and 21 years old. Youth will be assigned to internships, including technical and general office work in a variety of local businesses and/or organizations, or outdoor positions which include restoration and conservation of city parks, public property and vacant lots designated by City officials. All youth will be paid $7.25 per hour for up to 168 hours of work and $6.00 per hour for up to 12 hours of pre-employment Work Readiness Training. Employment begins Monday, June 30, 2014 and continues until Friday, August 8, 2014.

Applications are available by download at http://pittsburghpa.gov/personnel/pittsburghpartnership/psyep or by visiting one of the application centers: Eastside Neighborhood Employment Center (East) at 5321 Penn Avenue (412-362-8580), Goodwill of SWPA (Southside) at 2400 East Carson Street (412-632-1740), the Northside Coalition for Fair Housing at 1821 Brighton Rd. (412-321-5527), West End Works (West) at 825 Lorenz Avenue (412-533-2029). Applications will also be available at several neighborhood and community organizations. Applications must be submitted in person to one of the application centers with the required eligibility documentation stated in the guidelines.

Applications are accepted from Thursday, May 1, 2014 until Wednesday, May 14, 2014. Applicants who are less than 18 years must have applications signed by a parent or legal guardian. Applicants are assigned to jobs through a random lottery. All youth are encouraged to apply. Selected applicants will be notified by phone or e-mail.
