Biography of William Peduto

Bill PedutoBill Peduto is not your typical politician. Sure, he works hard for his constituents, takes care of problems and watches over the interests of the city. But, he does much more than that. A self described “Reform Democrat”, Bill Peduto wrote the most comprehensive package of government reform legislation in Pittsburgh’s history. He strengthened the Ethics Code, created the city’s first Campaign Finance Limits, established Lobbyist Disclosure and Lobbyist Registration and ended No-Bid Contracts. But, Bill Peduto’s work goes much further than that.

During Pittsburgh’s ongoing financial crisis, Bill Peduto has been the consistent voice of Fiscal Discipline. Decades of financial mismanagement and antiquated policies have left Pittsburgh with the highest debt ratio and lowest pension funding in the nation. Understanding that the city needed leadership — Bill Peduto was the first — and only — politician to call for the city to apply for Act 47 state protection. He helped to write a new budget, lobbied to get others on board and after a year of hard work he was able to lead the city into a new five year plan. He wasn’t afraid to make the tough votes to secure Pittsburgh’s future for the next five years and assured the residents that a $90 million deficit could be turned into a $50 million surplus. He was right and five years later he would once again lead city government through a new five year plan — this time as City Council’s Finance Chair. Bill Peduto adopted a bankrupt city budget and led the reform needed to make it sustainable.

In addition to leading Pittsburgh in Government Reform and Financial Management, Bill Peduto has also been directly involved in over $2 billion in transformative redevelopment of the city’s East End. Through his 16 years of work representing and working in Council District #8, Bill Peduto has had more experience in transforming Pittsburgh’s economy into a Med/Ed New Economy than any other politician. By establishing “community-Based” development plans and encouraging the investment into niche industries, Bill Peduto has had hands-on experience in building a New Pittsburgh.

All of that would keep most politicians busy for a career, but Bill Peduto has given much more to Pittsburgh. From co-creator and co-chair of the City’s Comprehensive Climate Action Plan to writing the legislation to protect Pittsburgh’s unique green hillsides — Bill Peduto, has been the champion of protecting and enhancing Pittsburgh’s new reputation as a leader in green initiatives. As co-creator of iBurgh, the nation’s first mobile app for local goivernment, he has led the discussion on e-democracy locally and nationally and has worked with local companies to help them in creating a new industry. Then add his own charity fund-raising video youtube project — Pedutube, his outdoor history lessons — Pedal, Paddle, Peduto, Executive Producer of a documentary about the Allegheny Observatory and the only politician who laces his skates as a member of Pittsburgh’s Celebrity Hockey Team and it is pretty easy to see — Bill Peduto is not your typical politician.

Kate Stoltzfus on HOW MANY REASONS ARE THERE TO LIVE IN PITTSBURGH?
  • What's wrong with you? Send the tax bills out at the current milege amd worry abiut refunds later? Do you know a hardship this will cause for a lot of people. Get the assessments right first and then worry about the tax bills. My assessment tripled with my land assessment raised 1000%. That's right 1000%. One of my neighbor's assessment quadrupled. You come and look at my property and tell me why it's worth so much. Plus, I have to carry mine subsidance insurance because I'm sitting on a coal seam that could colapse at any time. I live across the street from a rental priperty that's a slum and another house has bars on tje windows because they were robbed. My assessment has so many incirrect things on it. Who did these anyway? Some guy sitting in an office somewhere who arbitrarily decided what is and is not. This says my house was remodeled in 1991. Everything in the house is the same as when it was vuilt except for normal updates luke water heater, furnace, etc unless you consider wimdows remodeling. They aren't even worth it becausei can feel the cold air coming in. I hope you get voted out of office. You certainly are NOT for the people.
Elaine Branson on GREATER PITTSBURGH ARTS COUNCIL: BUSINESS, MEET THE ARTS!
  • Very inovative, and to comment by Eric S., this is bringing attention to your area from all around the country. It shares all that Pittsburgh has to offer and I am certain people who do not win will consider Pittsburgh favorably. I have considered Pittsburgh as a viable option, with the additional information I am learning it continues to rais on my list of where to move to.

  • Should we really be bribing people to move to Pittsburgh? How about spending $100,000 to develop an advertising campaign for the region instead and attract more than one new person?

  • I am soooo glad someone has paid attention to those of us between 45 and death! We still have so much to offer the world and a true desire to do so. We are still dreaming and planning and doing and living. Thank you for recognizing a valuable asset to community planning---the older, experienced person. I am so sick of hearing you're 'overqualified' and expected to be put out to pasture (or as a babysitter). I'm only 53 and I have a lot of dreams l have left to seek. I definitely will be applying!
